Childhood Home

On our return trip from Winchester we stopped by my childhood home. The wife had only seen it from a distance (the Fairfax County Parkway) previously. I bored her with a brief tour of the neighborhood - pointing our past homes of kids I played with, families I dog-watched for, people my mom has talked about. We parked in front of the house and I described it's layout. The exterior colors are different, the trees are taller and they've covered up one of the gardens (the sloping hill on the right side of the driveway). It looks different but still radiates 'home' and 'contentment' from the moment I turn onto the top of Clara Barton Drive.

Country Roads

Saturday we took a small road trip out to Winchester, Va. Our main goal was to visit the historic section of that town and drive through some of the cities along the way. We had a good time in historic Winchester. We saw the new building that the company I work for bought, we had some lunch and did some shopping. The wife found a set of theatre chairs that she desperately wanted, but the price - $250 was too much to bear - so they were left behind. We also drove through Gainesville and Haymarket. In Haymarket we stopped for some slurpees at a 7-11. That brought back memories of our 'dating years' when slurpees were the driving-around snack of choice. Even though nothing of significance came from the trip, it was nice to be out and about seeing the sites of a Virginia I rarely visit. The previous weekend we simply lounged around, recuperating from our return to the states, so this was an enjoyable chance of pace for us.

And finally, Rome

Rome was great. The adventure began before we landed. What started with a simple question asked to the passenger next to me resulted in a shared cab to the city. Our new friend negotiated a cab fare for the three of us to Rome, then got herself dropped off in one of the suburbs. After that it was just the wife and I and a cabdriver that spoke negligible English. The only thing he managed to say was 'this area (where our hotel was) bad at night. No go in the dark'. Greaaaaaaat. It really wasn't that bad. Even that wife didn't mind the walks home at 10pm or 11pm, so if she don't care it's a-okay.

The sights, the ruins, the food - oh the food was sooooo good. I never had a bad meal and only one meal was average (surprisingly, it was pizza). Even though we walked everywhere you never wanted to sit down for very long. Rome just sprawled out, promising that if you walked in any direction you would see something amazing. You've seen the pictures so I won't go into detail.

I won't have thought we could top our honeymoon/vacation in St. Martin, but Rome was such a wonderful place to be for our one year anniversary that it shot straight to #1 with a bullet. Bang!

Vacation Consolidation

Since we need to share the vacation pix with family and friends I've consolidated them. The link can be found above the 'Chump & Chumpettes" heading on the right. FYI: all other pictures - Vegas, Ft. Jackson, Mini-golf - had to be deleted. I'd used up all the free server space that comes with my Comcast account. If you want a image from one of the deleted topics, you know where to find me.

Croatian Vacation Explained

Our time in Croatia was short, only three days. It was just enough time to take a tour of the Wall City in Dubrovnic and do some shopping. We also spent some time on the beach. The 1st time we visited the beach it was in the late evening and the cliffs shaded the water from the sun. This made the water seem very cold. As painfully cold as the water was, it wasn't as painful as standing on the beach, which is made of sharp pointy rocks. So into the water Daniel - brother in law - and I went. The next day, when we went in the morning, the water seemed more temperate due to the sun's rays. Dawn and I joined Monica and Dan on a swim out to a small alcove in the rock wall were we hung out for a bit before swimming back to shore.

While we were sad to leave, traveling to and from was a real treat. We went through some gorgeous lands - valleys, mountains, hamlets - all of them made the 5 hour trip barely noticeable.

Thoughts on Bosnia

With such a great list of cities to visit I didn't think it would be this way. However, I was very taken with Sarajevo. We spent most of our time was in the city that sits in a valley. That which gave the city gorgeous views also made it an easy city to siege. The aggressors put their artillery and snipers in the surrounding hills, an easy vantage point from which to lay waste. What a terrible site it must have been for the citizens to regard such an amazing landscape with terror.
While no major aspect of the city's destruction was left out in the open, there were plenty of examples - more subtle than one would expect - of the destruction wrought. Pock-marked buildings, some with holes from mortar rounds, still lived in or part of a fully-functioning restaurant were the norm. Next to this buildings were other vacant buildings. However no one dare enter them for the owner's, in defiance against their aggressors have, booby-trapped the houses. When I asked why the government doesn't defuse and tear them done I was told there is no money in the government. In fact, there is little money anywhere. Getting a job is very difficult, getting a job that pays, even more so. Daily, we saw police officers stopping civilians in cars along the roadside. We were told that the police won't let you leave until you give them some money. It's not because of greed or their corruption - it's because they don't get paid by their government; they too have families to feed. It's tragic because Bosnia could be a wonderful tourist location. However, its own stalled economy forces those in a position of authority to shake down drivers - especially westerners - for money. Not the best condition for a relaxing time abroad.

Pictures Up!

We've gone through and posted pictures from our vacation in the former Yugoslavia republic. Here are pictures taken in Sarajevo, Mostar, and Buna - all cities in Bosnia.

Next up, the resort city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. Enjoy!

Returned!

We're back! The vacation was amazing. Both countries - former Yugoslavia and Italy possessed a unique charm - although for different reasons. Rome was everything you would expect - history, class, outstanding cuisine (I never had a bad meal), but the former Yugoslavia, a mystery to me before the trip, was such a surprise it was my favorite of the 3 countries. (Although one should not fault a place for delivering what was expected, that's how it shakes out this time; sorry Rome)

As soon as we sort through 512mb of digital photos, I will post the best ones as well as discuss the places we visited in more detail. I may also discuss the vacation of the Bean-cat, who had quite an exciting time at our relative’s house.

It was such a great vacation that I was a bit sad to go to work this morning. However, work is a requisite for paying off the bills and saving up for another vacation (until I hit the lottery that is).
